Traditional Chinese Medicine
TCM treatments include a variety of practices, the best known of which are acupuncture (the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body), Chinese herbal medicine (the use of herbs and medicinal plants), Tui Na (a form of therapeutic massage), TCM diet and nutrition, Qigong and Tai Chi (movement and meditation practices) and moxibustion (burning herbs close to the skin to apply heat to specific points).
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient, holistic health system that originated in China over 3,000 years ago. This system is based on the belief that health and well-being depend on the balance between two opposing but complementary forces, known as yin and yang, and that illness is the result of an imbalance in these forces.
The fundamental principles of TCM include the theory of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), which relate to organs and bodily processes, and the concept of Qi (vital energy) flowing through the body along channels known as meridians.
Questions about Traditional Chinese Medicine
TCM is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, digestive problems, stress, sleep disorders, respiratory diseases and emotional imbalances.
Chinese herbal medicine uses a wide variety of herbs and plants, each with specific properties to treat various conditions. Herbs can be administered in the form of teas, capsules, tinctures or decoctions.
Tui Na is a form of therapeutic massage in TCM that uses kneading, rubbing and pressure techniques on specific points and meridians to promote the circulation of Qi and treat musculoskeletal conditions.
Tai Chi and Qigong are practices that combine slow movements, breathing and meditation. They are known to improve flexibility, balance, strength and mental health, as well as promoting the circulation of Qi.
Qi is the vital energy that circulates through the body. Meridians are channels through which Qi flows. In TCM, it is believed that imbalances or blockages of Qi can lead to disease.
Like any medical treatment, TCM can have side effects. However, when administered by a qualified practitioner, these are usually minimal. It is important to discuss any concerns with a TCM practitioner.
TCM is often used as a complement to Western medicine. It can be particularly useful for conditions that do not respond well to conventional treatments. It is always recommended to consult a doctor before starting any TCM treatment.
A Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis may be different from a Western diagnosis. At Fisioterapia Lahera we are TCM practitioners and will assess your condition according to TCM principles before recommending a treatment plan.
